What Is Tech Neck and What Counters It

Screens pull the head forward for hours at a time. This entry examines the pattern and what counters it.
What Is Tech Neck and What Counters It

Screens sit low, and heads follow them: most of modern work happens a foot below where the eyes want to be, and the body accommodates without asking. By afternoon, the accommodation has a name.

What is tech neck?

Tech neck is the pattern of holding the head forward and down toward a screen for long stretches of the day. The position moves the head ahead of the spine, so the neck and upper back work harder to carry it. Over time, the position starts to feel normal.

The adult head weighs roughly a dozen pounds when it balances over the spine. Tilt it forward, and the effective load climbs steeply, because the muscles of the neck and upper back are no longer supporting a balanced weight but holding a lever. The further forward the head travels, the longer that lever becomes, and the more the same twelve pounds costs to carry.

None of this happens in an hour. It happens across thousands of hours, most of them spent doing good work.

The problem is not the screen. It is where the screen puts your head.

What counters it?

The counters are positional. Raise the screen toward eye level, bring the head back over the spine at regular intervals, change positions through the day, and give the neck supported rest instead of asking it to hold the same posture for hours. Small, frequent counters beat occasional large ones.

Screen height does the most work for the least effort, since every inch a display rises is an inch the head no longer has to drop. The reset comes second: sliding the head straight back until the ears sit over the shoulders, a movement that takes two seconds and attaches to any natural seam in the day.

The third counter is rest that actually rests the neck. Holding the head up is work, and work needs recovery, which is the problem MANI Flow™ was designed around: a structured neck wearable that holds the head and neck in neutral alignment, so that genuine rest is available in the middle of an upright day rather than only at the end of it.

The pattern took years to build; the counters take seconds. Frequency, in the end, is the whole game.
